Planning Shopify URL Redirects Before Changing Store Links

Changing a product handle, retiring a collection or reorganising a store can leave useful links pointing at pages that no longer exist. A redirect plan helps visitors reach a relevant replacement. The work starts with deciding which pages should move and what each visitor needs next, before anyone changes a URL.

Start with the reason for the change

Write down the business reason for each proposed URL change. A clearer product name, a merged collection or a permanently retired service can justify a move. A cosmetic preference alone may not justify the extra links and checks it creates. Keep stable addresses where they still describe the page accurately.

Separate a temporary stock issue from a permanent removal. A product that will return may need useful availability information on its existing page rather than a new destination. Ask the store owner to approve the intended outcome before implementation. A redirect is a routing decision; it does not decide whether a product should disappear.

Make a small mapping sheet

Create one row for each old address. Include the current page name, proposed destination, reason, responsible person and test result. Record important incoming routes such as menu links, campaign links and help articles. The aim is a clear handover that another person can check without reconstructing the decision.

Choose the closest useful replacement for the visitor's original task. If two collections are being combined, the destination should explain that combined range. If a product has a genuine successor, check that the successor is appropriate. When no relevant replacement exists, flag that decision for the owner instead of assigning the homepage automatically.

Check what Shopify can redirect

Shopify's URL redirect tool handles old paths that return a broken-page response. A redirect from an address that still serves a valid page will not work through that tool. This matters when a team expects a redirect rule to override a live collection or product without changing its availability first.

Shopify also restricts certain reserved paths, and query strings can create unexpected behaviour. Read the current platform guidance for the exact paths involved. For a multilingual or multi-market store, list and test the real language and market addresses individually rather than assuming a single test covers every route.

Shopify: Creating and managing URL redirects

Prepare a controlled change

Before importing a list, export the existing redirects and keep a dated copy with the change plan. Review the proposed mapping for repeated old addresses, spelling errors and destinations that are also due to move. Agree who will make the change and who will verify it. A small batch is easier to investigate than a large, unexplained import.

For links within the same primary domain, Shopify recommends relative destination paths. Keep the sheet understandable by including the full page names alongside those paths. Do not paste private preview links, account URLs or temporary test destinations into a production mapping. Check that the intended replacement is publicly available.

Test the whole visitor route

After the change, open each important old link and confirm the final page is the intended replacement. Check the page title, product or collection context and next action. Test a representative set on mobile as well as desktop. A technically working redirect is still unhelpful if the visitor lands on an unrelated item or a page they cannot use.

Update links you control so menus and content point directly to the final destination. Keep the test results with the mapping and note any exceptions that need a decision. For important external links you cannot edit, retain their old addresses in the verification list so later changes do not silently break the route.

Keep routing checks separate from search results

Google distinguishes permanent redirects from temporary ones: permanent redirects signal that the destination should become canonical, while temporary redirects serve a different purpose. Choose the behaviour that reflects the actual change rather than treating every move as temporary by default.

A redirect is not a promise of preserved rankings, immediate indexing or additional sales. Review the completed work first as a visitor-routing task, then monitor search and business data separately. If you need implementation help, bring the mapping sheet, store access requirements and unresolved decisions to a scoped support discussion. That gives both sides a concrete starting point.
