Review Shopify Product Descriptions Before a Copy Rewrite

A product-description rewrite works better when the brief explains what customers need to decide, which facts are approved and what the finished page must show. Start with one representative product before commissioning changes across the catalogue. This guide gives store owners a small review process they can use with a writer or implementation partner.

Choose one product and one buying situation

Pick a product that represents a useful part of your range. Avoid starting with the entire catalogue: different product types may need different information. Write down who is considering the item, what they already know and the decision they need to make. A first purchase, a replacement and a gift can create different questions.

Create a short review sheet with the product URL, the current description, the intended audience and the person responsible for approving changes. Add the date of the review. This keeps a copy project attached to a real product and gives everyone the same starting point. It does not require a redesign or a new app.

Build the brief from actual customer questions

Read a small, relevant selection of existing customer questions if your business has them. Remove personal information before sharing examples with a writer. Separate questions the description should answer from matters that belong in delivery, returns or support information.

For a hypothetical travel pouch, the question might be whether a specific object will fit, what is included or how to clean it. These are illustrative questions, not facts about a particular product. Ask the product owner to supply the answers rather than allowing the writer to fill gaps with plausible details.

  • Record the customer question in plain language.
  • Identify where the approved answer comes from.
  • Name the person who can confirm or correct it.

Separate approved facts from claims needing evidence

Make a fact sheet before editing the prose. Each entry should have an approved value, a source and an owner. Mark missing information as unresolved. If the range contains exceptions, note them explicitly instead of applying one description to every item.

Shopify’s product-description guidance recommends useful product details, readable structure and factual support for benefits. Apply that as a basic review standard. A supplier statement, an internal assumption and a verified product specification should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.

Highlight words that imply a comparison, certification or guaranteed outcome. Ask what supports each statement and whether the wording is appropriate for this exact product. Where support is absent, remove or narrow the claim. Do not turn a marketing rewrite into an opportunity to invent specifications.

Give the description a clear job

Draft a short opening that identifies the product and its intended use. Follow it with the information needed to judge suitability. Keep secondary background after essential buying details. The goal is to help the reader find an answer without working through repeated promotional paragraphs.

Agree the structure before polishing every sentence. Your review sheet can specify an opening, a short details list and a care or use note where relevant. Use only the sections the product needs. A small item with straightforward specifications may need less copy than a product with several important conditions.

Check the proposed wording alongside the images and nearby page content. If another section already explains a point, decide which location will own it. Repetition can make later updates harder: changing a specification in one paragraph while leaving an old version elsewhere creates conflicting information.

Review the copy in the actual page layout

Approve the description in context, using the product and theme preview appropriate to your workflow. Read the opening on a narrow screen, then find each answer from your question sheet. Check headings, lists and spacing rather than approving only a document detached from the page.

Include a product with longer text or a different information requirement in the review. Ask whether the structure still makes sense. Record any layout problem separately from a copy problem so the implementation brief is specific. A wording change should not silently expand into theme development.

Finish with approval and a small maintenance plan

Keep a final copy version, its approval date and the product identifiers it covers. List unresolved questions outside the publishable text. If someone will enter the copy into Shopify, agree who checks the saved page and who authorises release.

After publication, record recurring customer questions and any factual corrections. Use those observations to decide the next revision. A change in sales alone does not isolate the effect of a description, especially when traffic, pricing or promotions also change. Start with a clear, accurate page and a review process your business can maintain.
